Why water is so important to our body? Without water, are you able to survive?
The answer is NO! Without water you cannot survive. The moment you experience dehydration in your body, is the time where your body cells are losing its water, and eventually it will lead to cell dead.
So, what's the big deal??
Our body consist 70-80% of water and that it makes up a majority of our body weight and involved in many important functions, such as
Flushing out waste from the body
Regulating body temperature
Helping with our brain function
How water can help to improve our well-being?
1. Water helps to produce saliva
Water is a main component of saliva. Our saliva includes small amounts of electrolytes, mucus, and enzymes. It is essential for breaking down solid food and maintain our oral health.
Our body generally produces enough saliva with regular fluid intake. But, saliva production amy decrease as a result of age or certain medications or therapies.
2. Water helps to regulates body temperature
Staying hydrated is important to maintaining our body temperature. Our body loses water through sweat during physical activity and in hot and dry environment.
Our sweat keeps our body cool, but our body temperature will increase if we do not replenish the water we lose. Our body loses electrolytes and plasma when our body is dehydrated.
3. Water protects our tissues, spinal cord, and joints
Drinking water helps to lubricate and cushion our joints, spinal cords, and tissues. This will help us in our daily physical activity and ease the discomfort caused by Arthritis.

Do you know that each time you move, the spine compresses the disc, squeezing out the water within. Even walking or sitting upright can cause this as gravity causes the spine to compress. When the disc does not have adequate water, the result is pain and lack of mobility as well as increased risk of spinal injury. When you are not properly hydrated your body cannot replenish the water in the discs, causing them to remain compressed
4. Water helps to excrete waste via perspiration, urination, and defecation
Our body uses water to sweat, urine and have bowel movements.
Sweat regulates body temperature when we are exercising or in a hot and dry environment. We need water to replenish the lose fluid in our body. Our body needs sufficient water in our system to aid in our detox system, and avoid any constipation issues.
Our kidneys are also important for filtering out waste through urination. Hence, adequate water intake helps our kidneys to work more efficiently and smoothly, as well as preventing the formation of kidney stones.
5. Water helps to maximize physical performance
Drinking plenty of water during physical activity is very important.
Do you know that athletes perspire up to 6% to 10% of body weight during physical energy? Hydration will improve your strength, power, and endurance.
A person may be more susceptible to the effects of dehydration in participating hardcore training or high-intensity sports, such as basketball. Negative effects of exercise in the heat without enough water can include serious medical conditions, like decreased blood pressure and hyperthermia. Extreme dehydration can cause seizures and even death.
6. Water helps to prevent constipation
Eating fibre is not the only way to prevent constipation. It is also important to maintain our water intake so that our bowel movement contains sufficient water.
If we don't consume sufficient water, magnesium and fibre, we are more likely to experience constipation
7. Water aids in digestion
Experts confirm that drinking water before, during, and after meal will help the body to break down the food you eat more easily. This in turn will help you to digest the food more effectively and get the most out of your food.
Research also shows that the body adapts to changes in the consistency of food and stomach contents, whether more solid or more liquid.
8. Water helps in nutrient absorption
Water also helps to dissolve vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients from your food. It then delivers these vitamin components to the rest of the body.
9. Water helps in weight loss
Studies have show relation of body fat and weight loss with drinking water in both overweight girls and women. Drinking more water while dieting and exercising may help to burn off some extra fats.
10. Water helps to improve blood oxygen circulation
Water carries vital nutrients and oxygen to our entire body. Drinking sufficient water will improve our circulation and have a positive impact on our overall health.
11. Water helps to fight off illnesses
Drinking sufficient water can help to prevent certain health complications, such as
Constipation
Kidney Stones
Exercise-induced asthma
UTI
Hypertension
12. Water helps to boost energy
Drinking water activates the metabolism. A boost in metabolism has been associated with a positive impact on energy level.
One study found that drinking 500ml of water boosted the metabolic rate by 30% in both men and women.
13. Water aids in cognitive function
Proper hydration is the key to stay in tip-top cognitive shape. Research indicates that insufficient of water in the body can negatively impact our focus, alertness, and short-term memory.
14. Water helps to improve mood
Not getting enough of water can also affect our mood. Dehydration may result in fatigue and confusion as well as anxiety.
15. Water helps to keep skin bright
Adequate water intake will help to keep our skin hydrate and may promote collagen production. However, water intake alone is not enough to reduce the effects of ageing. This process is also connected to your genes and overall sun protection.
16. Water helps to prevent overall dehydration
Dehydration is the result of your body not having enough of water. Because water is very imperative to so many bodily functions, dehydration can be very dangerous.
Severe dehydration can result in a number of severe of health complications:
Brain swelling
Kidney failure
Seizures
